Humboldt County has such an abundance of beautiful places, you may never be able to see it all.  This area has idyllic biking and hiking trails, breathtaking redwoods, coast range mountains, rivers, and wildlife packed in amongst the tremendous scenery.  To get a slice of some of Humboldt's finest, head out Highway 36, sit back and enjoy the ride.

The stretch of roadway that begins the drive starts off of Highway 101 at Alton/Fortuna, an area full of pastures, forests, and most notably its rolling hills and mountains.  Since the original road crew never leveled out the road, it includes curves around hills, swinging twists, and 10-foot ups and down.  The road starts leaving the Pacific Coast at this point and goes east a spectacular 142-miles to Red Bluff just off of Interstate 5.  The stretch beyond Pamplin Grove twenty to thirty miles takes you around a winding mountain, jagged cliffs, steep drop-offs and narrow passes are plentiful, and you may think twice before hauling east any further with a Teardrop attached.  The pavement has been in good shape these days so you can cruise on it without having four wheel drive.  When you look out over the descending mountains and vivid green forests, you will see that few roads in the world rival this scenic highway.

Such an amazing amount of natural beauty....ours for the viewing.

The highway intersection at 101 & 36 is currently having a major overhaul.  There is an interchange going up so that by the end of 2010 you will be on Freeway only with exits and ramps taking you east to HWY 36.  At this time, early March, the middle stands for the overpass are in place.  The exits are now marked with detour signs and have a construction speed limit of 55 mph  and hefty fines if you speed.  The new turn-offs are not very well marked, ( my opinion as a frequent driver of this route), and the display detour signs are tiny and not currently lit up or even highlighted.  The turnoff is about 2/10 of a mile earlier now if you are coming from the NORTH.  If you have been coming from the south, go past the middle pylons (stands) and you will make a right turn off the highway about a tenth of mile past the old turnoff. A short drive will bring you to a stop sign (can't go any other way right now but left at the stop sign).  Then proceed left ( HWY 36 east) and stay on HWY 36 until you get to Pamplin Grove.   PLEASE YOU EXTREME CAUTION IN THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE.

I WILL BE ASKING CALTRANS TO PUT UP A "SPECIAL EVENTS" SIGN CLOSE TO THE ENTRANCE OF PAMPLIN GROVE.  The entrance to the grove is one lane and the speed is 5 mph.    If you MISS the turn to Pamplin Grove, go down a ways before you attempt to turn around.  Also when exiting the Grove, stay on the shoulder a bit before pulling out as it is a BLIND curve and vehicles coming from the East often do not expect anyone and suddenly are right upon you.
Stay safe, and sober, redwoods DON'T move over
