How close is the ocean (time wise) and what is a nice close beach to go to from Pamplin?  I figure that the locales would be the best to ask!

The drive to the coast can be accomplished in about half an hour from Pamplin Grove.  I'll give you some locations for nearby beaches that are under an hour drive when you arrive.  We also have some Wildlife Refuges that are adjacent to the ocean/bay and have nice areas to walk.  This time of year, mid January, the refuges are teeming with geese, Canadian & Aleutian, who have been lifting off in the early mornings by the thousands.  On my commute to work the other morn I spotted three flocks of a thousand + in the air, and about 10,000 on the grounds of the refuge awaiting lift-off.

The beaches around here are long, open and plentiful, with no shortage of COLD water.   As you go up about an hour, around the Trinidad, area,  the coastline becomes very evident. as it parallels Hwy 101 to Southern Oregon.   This region has some of the most beautiful coastline in Northern California/Southern Oregon....rugged and rocky.

Come see me when you are ready to become a beach tourist.   TDN

I figure we'll hit one of those beaches anyway. Not much for the swimmin', surfin' thing but we've never been in that ocean. Figure as long as we are there we might just as well take a quick dip so's we can say we did.

Rich,
The ocean here at that time of year shouldn't really be too bad... Definately swimable.
The main thing to know is where to swim (At what beach) in safe waters and what beaches not to swim at beacuse of steep drop offs that cause strong undertow and rip tides.
Around here, Moonstone beach is flat flat flat, very safe to take a dip... It's just South of Trinidad.
Of course there's Bakers beach too, just a couple of miles up the road from Moonstone...  If nudity is your thing.

Well I can't wait to get out there. I plan to see as much as possible because I don't know if we will ever make it back that far west.

I study the atlas every week trying to plan our trip.

Linda,
I thought that I was the only one obsessing about what route to take. I am ok from Albuquerque, NM to Bakersfield, Ca but I'm not sure how to go through CA.  Do I take the costal route do I take the one mapquest gave me I don't know.

The coastal route can be beautiful, though windy (long i sound) in parts.  I really don't recommend coming over WEST on HWY 36, unless you might be coming through Redding or I 5 (interstate), pretty as it may be, it is a windy road also.  I'm not sure what route the MapQuest gave you, so let us know and one of us can give you some choices.

Well...
If you're coming from the Southwest, I'd recommend getting on 101 North, either at least at San Francisco, (You'll get to drive across the Golden Gate) or if on I-5 heading North, cut over to 101 at Williams on 20.
Once on 101 North, take  the Ave. Of the Giants... It's really just the old highway that doesn't venture far from the new one, with several spots to get on or off. It's a nice introduction to the redwoods.
My personal favorite spot for taking pics of the trees is along Bull Creek. (On the road to Mattole, just off the Ave. of the Giants at the Founders Tree along 101)
Forgot... While on 101 North before the AG, Yaa might wanna check out the drive thru tree at Legget. (The Chandelier Tree)
It's the best of the drive thru trees in this area in my opinion.
Oh!!!... If burgers are your friend, be sure to stop for lunch at the chimney tree at Dyerville along the AG... Bring an appetite, you'll need it to finish your meal.

OK, how far are these 3 from where we will be? Gotta do the drive thru tree and I wouldn't mind driving the Golden Gate once (think they'd mind if I stop in the middle and take a pic of the TD?) and I've heard of the chimney tree although it isn't coming up in my brain at the moment.

Oh, we'll be heading south when we leave.

Rich,
Talk to Doug about your width on your tear and the Drive Thre Tree...
I think he opted not to pull the Comet thru it... mighta been worried about scratching it or dinging the fenders or something or rather...
The Golden Gate Bridge is about 4 1/2 hours South of Pamplin... Maybe five on teardrop time.
The Chimney Tree is about an hour South.
Legget about a hour and a half, maybe a a tick more... South of Pamplin.

Oh!!! A great spot for a photo op and the GG Bridge is at the vista point on the North end of the bridge. (Heading North Only)
Also, No GG bridge toll heading North, just South.

Chimney tree has an awesome burger,  I always make the stop.  The drive thru in Leggit is a tight fit.  My Ranger 4WD with a topper wouldn't go through it so had to back up to the exit and take the pic.  Take a tape to double check if in doubt.  Just an idea!!!  Fun to watch everyone drive through it and great people watching.  Doug

Guess that will have to be on the outbound trip then, my map program has me coming in north of there around Yuba City up 70 & 99

These 2 we'll have to see how things go, maybe on the OB trip too??

That figures!!
