Executive Decisions... 6-21-08
3. Firewood... We're having a chord of seasoned oak for the pit barbeque and a chord of mixed softwood for fires delivered to the event. Time and Joanie's say so, nixed my plans to go make wood next weekend.
Me thinks she wants you to make saw dust instead.

Now that the fires have been going on for a couple of weeks, I can report that significant headway has been made on containment. Pamplin Grove is safe and out of harms way, but some of you may encounter some smoke along the way getting here. OK... The event schedule is just about set, just two confirmations left to do... Both of the rangers talks. Changes have been made and new things added, so check it out on the event page on the IRG Site

Just got back from a wedding at the grove... A couple we met in line down at the public works office. The weather and conditions at Pamplin are splendid in spite of the forest fires still burning to the East and North. The temperature was somewhere in the mid 70's in spite of the National Weather's Website which has been listing it over 100 degrees every day this past week. The caretaker did say it got up into the 80's on one of the days during the most recent heat spell. There was a slight high altitude smidgeon of smoke cover out there today, but the air quality was fine, it just made the sky a dull blue instead of bright blue and the sun cast a golden hue on the ground... You couldn't smell smoke. There will be an access from the road alongside the meadow to wheel tears into the meadow and there is now an access to wheel tears back into the tent area, if you want shade... Lot of nice places back there for tears. The meadow and tent area access is going to free up other space for the parking we are going to need. For folks in the meadow and tent area, there will be parking areas near each area, so your cars will be close by. This somewhat puts our parking concerns to rest, but it is going to take good orchestration on the committee's part and cooperation on the participant's part. We will have at least three trailer dollies on hand with able bodied volunteers to assist in moving tears into these two locations. We are going to ask that the caravan coming up from Mendocino stage themselves into smaller groups when they get near Pamplin as we don't want traffic to come to a stop on Highway 36, waiting to get into the grove. We will be deep staging folks once inside the gate during registration check in, but please no large caravans at that point. The committee will be meeting before the event to put a workable plan together so as not to end up with any bottlenecking during check in. There will be an upper site near the cookshack, set asside for folks with health and physical issues if they wish to camp in that area. Other upper sites will be available for folks coming long distances, if they wish to camp in those areas.
Other News... The event schedule has now been finalized. Ranger Leiterman will be back by popular demand to give his Talk and Presentation on Bigfoot, along with Ranger Pat's Welcome to the Redwoods and Talk About These Trees. (Both Encore Performances) We will have today's Pamplin Grove Newlyweds on hand with us as Special Guests during the gathering and let me tell you... Teardrops played a role in today's wedding, going back well over two years, closer to three...
The event is gonna be fun and it may be twice as cozy as last time... Just remember, we're one big happy family when we get together.
About the only bad news I have to report at this time is that Highway 299 is closed right now somewhere between Redding and Weaverville due to fire conditions... Hopefully the road will reopen in time for our travellers wanting to use that route.

If we leave the campground during the event for a day trip to explore how is access out and back in handled? Will someone be on the gate all the time? I know I want to head out to the car show Sat morning and will pobably also head out sometime on Friday. Thanks for getting all this figured out, I can see why you only want to do it every other year!

Yeah, those logging trucks really move! They are also heavily loaded so they can't get slowed down if you are stopped in front of them. Let's all be safe and have a great event.

I've been commuting back and forth from Humboldt and Trinity Counties the last few weeks, and let me tell you the smoke is really BAD where my home is in Trinity County. I've stayed indoors for days and can't even tell what time it is on most days. There is an eerie quality to the sky when the sun cannot shine through. The fire(s) that are are burning up here are about 20 miles away (east) and are not expected to be contained for quite awhile as the fire recently jumped river and the terrain is so mountainous/forested that you can really only fight it by helicopter or drop ins. It is a breath of fresh air, literally. to return to the coast.
REGARDING REGISTRATION: IT WILL BE SELF-SERVICE if I'm not there to personally hand it to you!
It should go very quickly & smoothly as the packets are made up in advance, and you've already paid for things. I'd suggest you find a camping site and then come to the cookshack (Food Palace in my book) where you'll find an informational packet on the event which contains the schedule, ballots, etc. You can just help yourself to your envelope ( filed by registration # -see the roster) and I will deliver the T-shirts to the parties who ordered them. Not having to collect money and pay for items will surely expedite your express check-in!
BE CAREFUL ABOUT THE TURNS ON HWY 101 to HWY 36 and again approaching the Pamplin Grove "driveway". Many of you coming from the Mendo TDG have camped at Pamplin before, so you are aware of what we are talking about to make sure you get safely off the two lane highway and down to the gate area. Just remember to use care when turning off as it is a one lane road in.....and therefore one lane out. I've been making up a sign to post in front of the turn area as it is easy to pass by cuz all those redwood trees begin to look alike. If you reach Swimmer's Delight, you've gone TOO FAR east, and should turn around and come back west, go past the PG turn and do another turn around down by the store/VFD. To make the turn coming from the east could really make you jackknife, and it is one awkward turn to make safely coming from this direction.
See you soon, TDN
